Shall a multitude of words go unanswered, and a talkative man be acquitted? (Job 11:2) Jesus was never impressed with long, formal prayers that were prayed to be heard and admired by people. He exposed and condemned people who misused the dynamic of prayer to gain spiritual status with others. We all know people whose oratory in prayer must offend God. We do not pray to convince God, but to converse with Him. Our prayer is a response to His Spirit at work within us, creating the desire to pray. A multitude of words makes little difference. Get to the point! Be simple and direct! Note the people who arrested Jesus’ attention. He was always utterly available to the person in need who cried out the brief, honest prayer, “Master, have mercy – help me!” A person full of talk did not win Jesus’ approval. He often shocked the pompous and wordy pretenders to holiness who tried to create an impression with words. He pressed them beyond their words to their moral condition. His radical moral demand brought reality and honesty to the easy, word-oriented followers. Jesus demanded integrity of words and life. Some of us talk until we know what we want to say. Christ helps us to get to the point.
