Sham conducts whirlwind tour of Flood hit areas of Tehsil Akhnoor Asks administration to assess flood damages JAMMU, AUGUST 20- Minister for PHE, Irrigation and Flood Control, Mr. Sham Lal Sharma today visited flood affected areas of Akhnoor located on the right banks of river Chenab. During the tour the Minister, accompanied by a team of officers took stock of the situation arisen following heavy rains and floods. The Minister was accompany by District Development Commissioner, Jammu Mr. Ajeet Shau, Chief Engineer, Irrigation and Flood Control Mr. Varinder Badyal, Chief Engineer, PHE Mr. K.K.Gupta, S.C. Hardlic, Jammu Mr. Rajiv Malhotra, Executive Engineer, I & FC Akhnoor, SDM, Akhnoor and Several other officers. The Minister visited villages, Bakore, Citral, Chack Sikander, Chack Kirpal Pur(Dalput), Chanwan Mara, Sagrampur etc, and other low lying areas on the Bank of River Chenab, where large tracks of cultivated land of the farmers and other infrastructure was washed away. During his visit to these affected areas, the Minister directed the administration to immediately make arrangements for providing essential services to the people. At Bakore, the Minister was informed that some portion of Govt. Middle School and a temple was washed away due to flash flood . He was also informed that as immediate relief, the Government has provided 15 Kgs. Free ration to the affected families of these areas. The Minister directed the flood control authorities to take restoration work on War footing. Mr. Sham told the locals that the Government was alive to the problems and assured that all kind of steps shall be taken to provide them relief. He also issued directions on spot to the Flood Control department to take immediate steps to lay more crates along the flood prone banks of river Chenab and make a comprehensive plan for the construction of protection bunds. Mr. Sharma asked the local administration as well as Panchayat Members to visit the flood affected areas of Akhnoor tehsil to assess the losses including damage to residential houses and loss of cattle heads. He said that report would be forwarded to the government for release of relief in favour of the affected families. He said that the Government was aware of the problem of the people who have suffered losses due to flash floods and heavy rains. Responding to the urgent demands raised by the people for construction of protection crates, restoration of water and power supply, repair of damaged roads and payment of compensation to those families whose houses were damaged , the Minister assured them that all necessary steps would be taken too meet their demands. He said that already directions have been issued to District administration to conduct survey to assess the damages and submit a report to the Government.
