Shame on you, Airtel! (Friends, please share widely) First you - TopicsExpress

Shame on you, Airtel! (Friends, please share widely) First you sold us 3G packs enticing us with limitless possibilities of Internet calling - Skype and FaceTime and what not. Now you tell us that VOIP is different than browsing. We surely know that. But, we also know from our school that all digital data is zeros and ones. How does one differentiate between a zero and another zero? Just to tell you, Airtel, that there is something called the principle of Net Neutrality that is defined as follows: Net Neutrality Network neutrality (or open inter-working) means that you are in control of where you go and what you do online. Companies that provide Internet services should treat all lawful Internet content in a neutral manner. It is the founding principle of the Internet and what allows the Internet to be the largest and most diverse platform for expression in recent history. (tinyurl/qerxyek) Yet, you have decided to declare that you will treat different types of data differently. Your website says: All Internet/data packs or plans shall only be valid for internet browsing and will exclude VoIP (Both incoming/ Outgoing). VoIP over data connectivity would be charged at standard data rates of 4p / 10 KB (3G service) and 10p / 10 KB (2G service). Did you say Value Added Services, Airtel? First we were told that SMS and ringtone downloads were Value Added Services. Now you are telling us that Skype and VOIP is too. What next? Will the following become VAS too? Facebook - has my moods and reactions not adequately expressed by zeros and ones. Instagram - has millions of colours and shades, certainly more than what a mere zero and one can carry. Music downloads - has entire octaves rather than zeros and ones Twitter and WhatsApp - We saw that coming. Doesnt it kill your obscenely priced SMS? A text message of mere 160 characters that consumes a nanosecond of network time, yet was priced same as one full minute of speech. We will not let you get away with this. I know that in these days of crony capitalism, you ISPs will have your way after much hemming and hawing by the Regulators. But, we will not take you on all together. We will finish you off, one by one. Now, since you are the leader of the pack and also the most greedy one, let me start with you. Through this Facebook post I implore my friends to start boycotting one company, i.e. you, Airtel! Let them start a mass migration to other Mobile phone service providers, just any other company - Vodaphone, Tata Docomo, Idea, Aircel, Reliance ... If they too join hands and take the same path after you are gone, we always have the trusted BSNL/MTNL. The government companies are not glamorous, but they do not cheat and surprise us like you guys do.
