Shameful Robben might have cheated his way to World Cup glory, but he lost the respect. He should have been yellow carded in his first dive itself. Yes, there was contact with Robbens toe and Marquezs foot; but Robben fooled the referee with his exaggerated dive. Neymar also does the dives and the falls to influence match officials. But few players like Messi does not fraternise with such dark arts of the sport. FIFA have clamped down on biting and extreme examples of fouling, but diving seems here to stay. It is 12 years since Brazil’s Rivaldo produced the worst example of it during a World Cup match with Turkey. FIFA fined him for bringing the game into disrepute, but football has not addressed this issue.
