Shanghai Cooperation Organization (SCO) Strengthens its Ties as Counterweight to NATO With the 6 member Shanghai Cooperation Organization (SCO) anchored by China and Russia about to expand its members to include India, Pakistan, Iran and Mongolia, the regional security bloc is becoming the center of gravity of global geopolitics and beginning to pre-empt US attempts to destabilize Central and Southern Asia. The expansion brings previous rivals under a single umbrella organization and should help resolve long-standing tensions between members states that are a hold over from the age of European colonialism and Japanese militarism. The rapprochement between Russia and China will enable their allies who have been former rivals, especially India and Pakistan, to better accommodate each other. Bilateral security ties between China and Tajikistan (news.xinhuanet/english/china/2014-08/19/c_133568824.htm) and economic, cultural and political ties between Mongolia and China are also being strengthened, as exemplified by President Xi Jinpings recent State visit to Mongolia (euroasianews/china-and-mongolia-sign-major-coal-gas-deal/). “At present, the SCO has started to counterbalance NATO’s role in Asia. Consequently, these countries want to take part in the SCO in the capacity of safeguard of their interests. At present, the SCO is strengthening because the American policy towards Asia has been excessively tough and is aimed at suppressing their interests. The American policy contradicts the interests of Asian countries. In this sense, it’s quite natural that India, Pakistan, Iran and Mongolia expressed desire to join the SCO. The SCO now encompasses nearly all of Eurasia, comprising Russia, China, the nations of Central Asia and South Asia. Together with similar regional blocs in South America (the Mercosur and ALBA alliances) and Southern Africa (SADC) a new global balance of power is beginning to emerge and consolidate.
