Shannon Lee Smith Id ammend this to say Never Just a Dog, but much of what this message brings holds true for Shadow. I never minded helping him into the truck. I never minded his ear splitting barking (or howling when he was younger) when hed see a cow while we were driving. To me it was an opportunity to find joy with him in the things he loved. I never minded the constant stopping to smell EVERYTHING, because it was a reminder to slow down and enjoy where you are each moment. I never minded sweeping up all the fur, despite pointing out how he should be bald, because he filled our house with love. Coming home last night after work, I was the first one home. I dreaded opening the front door because I knew thered be no excited greeting. Even when Shadow was not feeling good at the end he ALWAYS greeted me, excitedly. In fact, I was on the phone with my Mom, Carrie Martz, Saturday evening when I got home from work. I was upstairs talking. Shadow heard me and came running up the stairs. He was so excited to come see me that he fell up the stairs trying to get to me. It instantly made me laugh as I went to help him up the stairs...... and we shared a moment of joy, the kind that only he could bring me. Pure...... unfiltered. My house is too quiet now. No more clicking little paws. No more circle wags that were the highest form of happy wags. No more cute little ears that went different directions and told me what you were thinking. No more 7 & 7 stares..... to let me know it was breakfast or dinner time. No more countless other things that are going to happen to remind me of what youd do in that situation. I miss you, Sweet Shadow. And although you were a Dog, you were never Just a Dog. You were family. You were my adopted family. You were never owned, in fact, you owned me. You were never a Pet. I dont feel you can own another living creature... if you are bringing them into your life as a family member, you are sharing a life, not owning one. Its the only way I know. My house is too quiet now.
