Potluck, movie and discussion with Director and Producer of movie! RACING TO ZERO Racing To Zero is a quick-moving, upbeat documentary presenting new solutions to the global problem of waste. By simply substituting the word RESOURCE for the word GARBAGE, a culture can be transformed, and a new wealth of industries can emerge. Three years ago the mayor of San Francisco pledged to achieve zero waste by 2020. Racing to Zero tracks San Francisco’s waste stream diversion tactics and presents innovative new solutions to waste. This film documents a surprising, engaging and inspiring race to zero. ******************** 12/12 WHT: Incinerator is not the answer to island’s trash problem My name is Richard Creagan, M.D. I have been a human genetics researcher at Yale University, a medical director of a biotech company, a farmer for more than 20 years and a board certified emergency medicine specialist. I am currently the state representative for District 5, representing Kona to Ka‘u. I am writing in regard to the proposed waste-to-energy incinerator. One thing is very clear from my medical and legislative experience. There are always unintended consequences of our actions; there are always unforeseen consequences. In the case of a waste to energy incinerator, there are many possible and inevitable bad unintended and unforeseen consequences, but the science is clear that even under the best case there will be great harm to our environment and ourselves that will last for many generations from such a plant. It seems like a simple solution, but it is not and should not be undertaken. The financial costs are huge, but the environmental and human costs are vastly more. This is a terrible solution to a problem that has other solutions. The poisons, including dioxins, produced by such a plant under the best of circumstances are horrible, but as we all know these plants are never operated optimally and will inevitably be shut down at great cost. Let us not be stampeded into this horrible solution. Richard P. Trash - https://youtube/watch?v=6b99hfFvKCg ****************************************** We need to work towards zero waste like what many other places in the country are doing and not build a waste incinerator on Hawaii Island. We need to back up on this potential plan for a waste incinerator in Hilo. A potential $300 million spent unnecessary on this boondoggle is shameful & embarrassing. A one minute google search pulls up nine bankruptcies to municipalities related to waste to energy incinerators. Waste to energy is the dirtiest technology, hands down, spewing potent dioxin and mercury carcinogens - and the newer facilities are said to be more polluting and less efficient than the older models. Waste to energy is said to be the most inefficient and expensive way to generate electricity - not economically viable, plagued with malfunctions, environmental fines, shutdowns, gas leaks, explosions, and seriously compromising air quality besides being associated with heart attacks, cancers, neurological disorders, and other serious health issues. Other towns have already experienced steep rate hikes and tax increases due to waste to energy technology; what residents were promised was not what they got. San Francisco is now diverting 72% of its waste and on target to increase their goal of zero waste. Recycling saves money and has proven to creates more jobs. I ask the council and mayor to re-think this direction before we make this expensive blunder. And make no mistake, it IS a blunder. ************************** VIDEO & VOTE: Hawaii County Council Resolution to Slow Down & Re-think Hilo Waste Incinerator - Link:ustream.tv/channel/occupyhilo
