Share The Sultan of Sokoto Alhaji Muhammad Sa’ad Abubakar yesterday said bad governance has been responsible for the insecurity challenges bedeviling the country. He said so many things are still going wrong because the leaders in the country have refused to allow things to work properly. He was speaking during the national conference on the role of Muslim scholars in fostering unity, peace and security in Nigeria at the headquarters of the Jama’atu Nasril Islam (JNI) in Kaduna. The Sultan said the security challenges facing the country wouldn’t have degenerated into the present situation if those in power did what were expected of them. “Bad governance is the cause of insecurity in Nigeria. If those in power are doing what is expected of them we wouldn’t have this problem. More people, particularly scholars have spoken against the insurgents; most of them delivered papers at different forum, condemning them long before now that what they are doing is anti Islam. “So what else do you want the Ulamas to do. Ulamas don’t control government, traditional leaders don’t control government, what we have to do as religious and traditional leaders are to advice government. Many papers have been written to federal government in particular on how to resolve this insecurity problem.” The sultan was reacting to the pleas of the chairman of the presidential committee on dialogue and peaceful resolution of security challenges in the North, Barrister Kabiru Tanimu Turaki (SAN) that the clerics should make their position known on the activities of Boko Haram. Earlier in his address, the Sultan said the turnout of ulamas at the conference from across the country, “shows that we are ready to be united. Our coming together under one umbrella, sitting down to discuss the main problem facing us I think it is a very good plus to all of us. “We want to state it clearly here that our main problem is lack of unity, lack of consensus in whatever we do and of course these are points bothering Muslims of this country. “We are very aware of the challenges facing us as Muslims not just in Nigeria but globally which we believe somebody somewhere is pinning on us. But insha Allah with constant prayers from all of you as distinguished Ulamas, with constant prayers from the downtrodden and any other persons, we shall overcome these challenges and move to greater height, insha Allah. “It is high time we put aside the so-called differences in understanding Islam. Put aside hatred and put aside other interest and put Islam above all. “We refuse to accept the fact that any time there is an attack anywhere in the world you hear of Islamic terrorist or Islamic fundamentalists but when worse violence was perpetrated by those non-Muslims you hardly hear it or being attributed to that religion.” Earlier, the chairman of the committee and Minister of Special Duties, Barrister Kabiru Tanimu Turaki (SAN) had appealed to the Sultan of Sokoto Alhaji Muhammad Sa’ad Abubakar and other traditional leaders in the region to call on the Boko Haram members to accept dialogue in order to end insurgency in the region. “We all know the importance of dialogue in Islam and as such we are pleading with the sect to accept dialogue,” he said. He said so far his committee has met with some members of the group, particularly those in the Shura cabinet but that they are yet to meet with the critical members of the sect. “Yes, we are making progress because we have met with some members of the group (Shura). But we are yet to meet other critical members of the sect.” Governor Mukhtar Ramalan Yero of Kaduna in his speech urged Muslim clerics in the country to use the Ramadan lecture to preach peace in the country. He noted with dismay how in the past some scholars reduced their ‘Tafsir’ sessions to a platform for attack on practices in other faiths or sects or innuendos that disparaged the practices of other scholars. For dat APC is our party this time around to aviod insecurity in country.
