Undergraduate Student Title or Heading Turned my cants into cans and my dreams into plans Your Story My name is Christine Laitila and I will be receiving my BS in Human Service Leadership this Spring of 2014. I never thought that I would be graduating from college with my bachelors degree. However, here I am a first generation college student and a non-traditional student who has turned my cants into cans and my dreams into plans. I began my college journey in a small private college in the Upper Peninsula of Michigan in Spring of 2010. In the spring of 2012, I applied to UW Oshkosh since I was told that UW Oshkosh has many great programs. I was accepted!! After the news of getting accepted, I applied to graduate with my Associates degree in General Studies from the small college known as Finlandia University. In April of 2012, I received my Associates Degree and I knew I had a lot in store for me as I made the move to Appleton in the Summer of 2012. My first semester at UW Oshkosh was a great experience and I met a lot of wonderful people who worked with me to adjust to the big campus life that I was not familiar with. I learned about resources and I took a job as a Learning Group Coordinator through the TRIO program. I began working with Freshmen on a weekly basis. This position helped me adjust to campus life and it helped to connect me to the resources that I needed to get to where I am today. Working full-time and going to school full-time is a very chaotic schedule, but I have done it for the past two years here at UW Oshkosh. I have learned the value of education and I have learned to be open minded. Last Fall I was inducted into the Non-traditional Student Honor Society which has helped me to turns my cants into cans. I am also a part of the National Society of Leadership and Success which has also helped me to experience how to build leadership skills and to prepare me for my journey after graduation. Working with freshmen on a weekly basis has made my experience at UW Oshkosh a very enjoyable and it has helped me to build my leadership roles. I also have experienced the warm welcoming from many staff, professors and students on campus. I am glad to be graduating from UW Oshkosh and I would recommend this University to anyone looking for a place to call home when being away from home.
