The Nigerian-British actor plays Martin Luther King in Ava DuVernay’s drama that tells the story of the Southern Christian Leadership Conference’s voting rights campaign in the Alabama town led by King. The protest, which culminated in the historic march from Selma to Montgomery in 1965, marked one of the most dramatic moments of the civil rights movement and was instrumental in Lyndon Johnson signing the Voting Rights Act that same year. The HFPA’s Patricia Danaher caught up with Oyelowo in New York and asked him about the role and the film’s significance for today’s audiences.
