Shared by Art for Bats - Most of you will know that microbats have echolocation, but how do bats living in caves know that it is time to hunt? - The solution is: they have a pressure sensor! Bats have a highly sensitive pressure sensor which is very sensitive to air pressure fluctuations. Scientists from the University of Illinois (USA) had noticed that the more insects were in the air, the more bats left their caves deep beneath the earth where constant temperature, humidity and air flow conditions prevailed. Only the atmospheric pressure dropped outside and inside, and more insects swarm at lower pressure. The bats have a sixth sense located in the middle ear.
