Shared from CCBC Website : Council improvements transforming lives at sheltered housing scheme (27 November 2013) Tenants at a sheltered housing scheme in Deri have had their lives transformed thanks to the Councils Welsh Housing Quality Standard (WHQS) improvement programme. Caerphilly County Borough Council will be spending around £200 million over the next six years bringing its homes up to WHQS. Many homes will benefit from new kitchens, bathrooms, central heating systems, electrical upgrades and external improvements. The Council is tailoring WHQS improvements to meet the needs of individual tenants, with specially designed kitchens and bathrooms helping to transform the lives of many tenants. The Councils Caerphilly Homes team, responsible for delivering the WHQS programme, has appointed an occupational therapist who ensures the individual requirements of tenants are taken into account when planning improvements. The improvements have made a real difference to tenants at Ysgwyddgwyn sheltered housing scheme, Deri. One such tenant is Mr Meyhew whose flat recently benefited from a new kitchen, shower room and electrical rewire. Mr Meyhew had previously found it difficult using his kitchen and shower room as they hadnt been designed to suit his needs as a wheelchair user. Caerphilly Homes occupational therapist worked with Mr Meyhew to design a new kitchen and shower room to better meet his needs. Mr Meyhew said: I am very happy with my new kitchen and shower, the new layout has made both rooms much easier to use. The standard of work is brilliant and the team who did the work were really helpful. Another tenant at Ysgwyddgwyn, Mr Jennick, also benefited from the occupational therapists support; following an assessment his bath was replaced with a walk in shower. Mr Jennick commented: The workforce were fantastic and finished the job quickly. Having the shower fitted has made a big difference to me and Im really grateful for the support Ive had from the occupational therapist. Cllr Gerald Jones, the councils Cabinet Member for Housing, added: The councils WHQS programme is about much more than simply improving homes, we are also using this investment as an opportunity to transform tenants lives. Its wonderful to hear how these improvements are making a real difference to tenants. Its also really pleasing to hear such positive feedback from tenants on the councils in-house workforce and the high standard of improvements being delivered.
