A Renewal Area is a means of co-ordinating funding and services in a defined geographical area where it is recognised that there are housing, social and environmental problems. Renewal Areas aim to bring about the comprehensive regeneration of an area, resulting from improvements to homes, shops, other commercial premises, the local environment and the infrastructure. A positive impact on health and well-being is an essential ambition and every opportunity is taken to utilise and develop community initiatives. This is achieved by all Council departments working together and in partnership with the private sector, other public bodies and, most importantly, the local community to develop co-ordinated strategies to tackle the problems identified by the people who live and work in the area. Renewal Areas have proved to be extremely successful in Wales in tackling problems of deprivation that exist in certain areas and in creating thriving, vibrant, confident and sustainable communities equipped to meet future challenges. Renewal areas in Caerphilly Within Caerphilly we have been particularly successful in regenerating communities through the use of Renewal Areas. Completed Renewal Areas include the villages of Abertysswg, Oakdale, Tir-y-berth and more recently Rhymney. We are currently undertaking ten-year Renewal Area programmes in the villages of Llanbradach and Senghenydd. Renewal area ambitions Physically regenerate the housing stock through extensive planned and coordinated programmes of grant assistance, supported by the in-house Home Improvement Agency Service. Help improve the energy efficiency of the housing stock. Undertake extensive environmental improvements. Carefully consider and implement solutions to transport problems. Help improve the commercial areas. Help tackle community safety concerns. Actively encourage the local community to participate in and help guide the Renewal Area regeneration project. Achieve a positive impact on the health and well-being of residents.
