Shared from DPAC (Disabled People Against Cuts); HUNDREDS of elderly and disabled people are set to lose up to 70 per cent of their benefits under a new council policy, prompting serious concerns for their physical and mental health. Cash-strapped Plymouth City Council will now take 70 per cent of a person’s Disability Living Allowance into account when assessing how much they pay towards previously free social care services. PCC chiefs claim this will create a fairer system, but vulnerable people and their families have accused the council of effectively imposing a ‘disability tax’. The Labour council says the move brings it in line with how the majority of councils operate – including Devon and Cornwall councils. It has also blamed Government cuts for the “considerable pressure” on its social care budget saying it has been forced to do “more with less”.
