Shari Horton Ratliff There will be an open visitation for family and friends at Laird Funeral Home from 5:00-7:00 p.m. on Friday, January 9, 2015. A celebration of life service will be held at the First Baptist Church in Wells, Texas at 1:00 p.m. on Saturday, January 10, 2015. In lieu of flowers, memorial donations can be sent in her name to The Hospice of East Texas. Shari Horton Ratliff, age 55, died peacefully on January 5, 2015 surrounded by family and friends at Nacogdoches Memorial Hospital, after a two year fight with cancer. Shari was born March 1, 1959, in Lufkin, Texas, the daughter of Billy Ray and Lawanda Jean Horton. Shari thoroughly enjoyed music, literature, and serving God. She graduated valedictorian at Hudson High School (1977), and received a B.A. with honors at Stephen F. Austin State University with a focus on early childhood education. In 2001, Shari married the love of her life, Lieutenant Colonel Kenneth S. Ratliff (USAF), and accompanied him on numerous military adventures in Louisiana, Texas, Mississippi, Colorado, Georgia, and Alabama. Throughout her life, Shari worked in numerous locations as an early childhood educator, an administrative assistant to Texas State Representative Jim McReynolds, lead coordinator for the Nacogdoches County Safe and Drug Free initiative, and as a licensed insurance agent in Shreveport, LA, Wells, TX, and Fort Worth, TX. In addition to raising two children, Shari took an active role at the various churches she has held membership in through the years. Most recently, at the First Baptist Church in Wells, TX, Shari served as first string pianist and lead Easter and Christmas choir cantatas. She also taught children’s Sunday school and choir, took a leading role in multiple vacation bible school programs, and participated in missionary efforts with Navajo Nation youth in New Mexico. Shari is survived by her husband Kenneth; her son Cliff and daughter-in-law Annie Meyer of Houston, TX; daughter, Cheyenne Meyer of San Marcos, TX; her sister, Shanna Magee of Nacogdoches, TX; four nieces and five nephews, and a multitude of other relatives and close friends.
