Sharifa Johka told me yesterday that underneath the laughter of yesterday there were tears and sadness. She was right. I had myself a good long cry today. It seems everyone I know is wrestling with finding balance in a movement that is constantly changing. We are asking difficult questions of ourselves and the world. How can we communicate more effectively? How can we remain compassionate of others and to ourselves in the midst of unrelenting mean and personal attacks from those who refuse to see our humanity. How can we fight a large and powerful system that refuses to play fair? Despite the growing frustration and anger at trumped up charges, police in riot gear at every turn, biased media and the herd who care more about the fabric of a flag and the direction it is facing rather than the civil rights it represents we ARE trying to ground ourselves in peace while preparing for even more heartbreak. Some in our families dont agree with us or have stopped speaking to us labeling us as too radical or too liberal. Some have lost their jobs or quit school because justice is more than a calling it is a vocation. Some of us have a tenuous hold on things we valued just a few months ago because suddenly everything before this now seems superficial. Returning to an old normal is impossible when grieving. And we are grieving because those we love are being killed by police in the streets not just today but for YEARS. It matters not if we knew them personally. They are part of our human family and their memory pushes us forward. Yes I cried hard tears tonight but tomorrow is a new day. So Sarah Hermes GriesbachAaron McMullinDe Andrea NicholsDerek K.
