Sharing my response to hair loss and loss of luster. It can be - TopicsExpress

Sharing my response to hair loss and loss of luster. It can be very depressing. I know! Thought a few might relate... There can be multiple reasons for hair loss. Ferritin is only one of them. Blood sugar balancing as well as thyroid hormone (t4 AND t3) optimization are a couple others reasons. Make sure that your b12 is above 600 and you need to have your ferritin above 60. It takes almost a year for hair to stop falling out...and also some additional time after having a baby, esp if you are nursing. I have long hair and I can relate...when I first went on TH in Dec 2013, my thick, shiny hair looked like straw. My family and friends were horrified. I was heartbroken. I had been contemplating cutting it for the last 6 months as it was depressing and a constant visual reminder of my illness. My thyroid is fully optimized. My adrenals however, are still an issue and cortisol remains low. Really trying to avoid a steroid, as that is what my mother did and it did not turn out well in the long run. I finally added Evening Primrose (Solgar) to my multi, extra vit d (Jarrow) and cod liver oil (Carlson) and my hair got so much better, and is almost back to normal. I alternate days on the EP and CLO. I also added a high dose iron (30mg) about 3 months ago, as my ferritin was still only 28 at a year with low dose supplementation. You got to get that iron (ferritin) up. But watch the transferrin sat %. Proceed carefully if you are close to 40%, as this can begin to be a cancer concern. Also, go easy on the sugar as it will increase the hair loss. Try coconut sugar if you bake. It does help, as the glycemic index is only 38. Also make sure that you are not skimping on the good fats. They are so important to hair, skin and nails, as is Biotin. I also take 1 tbsp of raw centrifuge coconut oil every day. Your multi-vitamin is critical. Make sure that you are taking a good one with good quality amounts and forms of bs and selenium in particular. This is the one I use by Pure Encapsulations.Pure Encapsulations Nutrient 950 with Vitamin K - 180 capsules They have a few choices (with vit k, no iron, no copper, etc. I use the one with the vitamin K and then add my iron (Solgar) separately. Terry Naturally makes an awesome iron (clinical iron and Energy and Endurance are the same thing), but it has added mg (no problem), but zinc and copper, you have to be careful on your combined amounts. Hang in there! With some time and getting a few things back to normal, it will come back!
