Sharing this from The Civil War Scrapbook. Not much is said about some of the forts used as the defense system on the James River by the Confederacy, but several of them survive today, including Fort Boykin near Smithfield, VA. The Fort is so large, you have no sense that you are actually inside of anything. It not only stood the shelling of the USS Galena, by has quite a history going back to Colonial times (see link in comments) and offers a view of the remnants of the James River Ghost Fleet.
