Sharing this from the newly formed Concerned Citizens of Schuyler County and the Finger Lakes... Dear friends o mine and lovers of the Finger Lakes: I know the seemingly constant requests to sign online petitions can get annoying -- so I hope you will bear with me, because Im about to ask you to sign another. As you might be aware, a Texas-based company called Crestwood Midsteam has plans to ship and store more than 88 million barrels of fracked LPG gas in underground salt caverns on Seneca Lake, just north of the village of Watkins Glen. Besides the dangers inherent in such inadequate, unsafe storage of explosive fuels, the shipping activity at the Crestwood facility will put an additional 190 truck trips on our local roads every day -- 70,000 more per year! -- as well as increase the danger related to rail traffic as these fuels travel in rail cars over the old 75-foot-high trestle at the Watkins Glen gorge. Crestwoods stated goal is to make the Finger Lakes the gas storage and transportation hub of the Northeast -- a goal in direct conflict with the existing agricultural and historic character of the region. The company has no emergency plan in place, even though the risk of explosion, fire, and toxic spills will be great. And if this project gets up and running, the impact will be felt far beyond Watkins Glen, especially if something goes wrong, but even if it doesnt. Plan to spend more time on the roads in heavier traffic and with more accident sites to maneuver around, more time waiting at busy railroad crossings, and more time wondering whether our bucolic roadways have simply become far too dangerous for our private vehicles, farm equipment, Mennonite buggies, cyclists, and pedestrians. All this for the promise of 10 jobs. TEN jobs. And Crestwood is already filing for exemptions from paying its fair share of taxes. This is the kind of neighbor we dont need in a region that now provides thousands of jobs in agriculture, wineries, and tourism and generates billions of dollars for the state of New York through those thriving industries. And lets not forget the fact that we grow delicious food and make award-winning wines here. Why would we take the risk of poisoning those precious things with toxic gas? Putting such a facility, and its attendant hazardous traffic, in the heart of a beautiful agricultural and wine-making tourist region -- putting at risk not only the precious and beautiful waters of our lakes and land but the lives and livelihoods of all who live and play here -- is sheer folly. By signing the petition letter via the link below, you will help us send a clear message to NY Governor Cuomo that we do not want his Department of Environmental Conservation (DEC) to grant permits for this dangerous, foolhardy gas storage plan. change.org/petitions/andrew-cuomo-to-prevent-a-large-scale-gas-storage-project-on-the-shores-of-seneca-lake-and-thus-preserve-the-health-of-the-finger-lakes-and-protect-the-people-and-businesses-that-currently-thrive-there?recruiter=32169088&utm_campaign=mailto_link&utm_medium=email&utm_source=share_petition Please feel forward this message to friends and family who might like to sign the letter or educate themselves on this issue.
