Sharing this on a Saturday! =D Are Singaporeans getting so competitive that they’ve forgotten what theyre fighting for? Its a common sight to see libraries and fast-food restaurants filled with students during exam periods. The jams in the morning are always worse than the ones in the evening because people are not knocking off at 6.00 p.m. anymore. Labour jobs are not longer desired by Singaporeans who have higher aspirations—to earn that one million dollars. But, as we strive for the best results, have we sat down and wondered why we do that? I know a man who is twenty-eight this year. Let’s call him Person A. Hes working for $1,500 a month with an N-level cert, and knocks off every day to have dinner with his family. Hes getting married soon, and intends to have children. Yes, he won’t be able to afford a condo nor a car—but hes contented that he can settle down, start a family and live happily ever after. Hawker food for dinner? No problem. I know of another person who is the same age. Let’s call him Person B. He has got his degree not too long ago, and has forgotten about work-life balance. I talked to him briefly, and everything he said was work. No choice, its Singapore, he kept on saying this. Dinner? Youve got to be kidding. Im working until 11.00 p.m. daily! Hes earning over $4,000 a month and looks a lot more stressful every day. I cant start a family with this salary! he told me. You know, I tend to wonder: Person A is earning a lot lesser, yet hes happy every day. Person B is earning a lot more, and he seems to be depressed. The sad fact is that Ive got more friends who live a life like Person B. So, my question is simple: Were competitive, but what the hell are we competing for? To win something tangible and lose a smile?Person B said he has no choice because hes in Singapore. I would argue that there are many Person A in Singapore as well. Is there really no choice? Or have we jumped on the bandwagon? What do you think? Please share and like this if you have enjoyed reading it! P.S.
