Sharing this post that one of my dads Vietnam brothers posted: Had a fish fry at my VFW post last night. One of three major events of the year. I was able to explain to the 200 or so civilians present why vets call each other brother. And why two unrelated grown men will exchange, I love you man. My job was easy. I had the perfect setup for my presentation. Gonzalo Pancho Salazar, Jr., my Brother of 45 years was in attendance. That was the comforting thing for a Diamond Head gunship crew member. You knew if you were shot down, Pancho was coming to get you. We have sat in hospitals with each other after heart bypass surgery. Weve buried other Brothers. We know one day there will only be one. After choking up, I handed the mic to Pancho. He told of the honor and integrity his father had instilled in him growing up. And how it had guided his choice of search and rescue over other aviation fields. But in the middle of our conversation, an 8 year old girl came up and asked if she could sing us a song. She gave a wonderful rendition of God Bless America. A rousing round of applause followed. Now they understand.
