Sharing with permission ... So you hate Sorority Sisters and want to do something effective? Good. But you have to know how it all operates. - These shows are in the can, so if you are simply telling VH1 that youre mad, they dont care. Theyll keep playing them. - If you say that you wont watch, they wont care. Plenty of people will watch, and enough to be a success. - Advertisers purchase time on VH1 and/or with a cable and/or satellite provider (e.g., Comcast/Xfinity) without picking a particular show. Instead, they simply say, Put me on a show at a certain time, that targets a certain demographic. So guess what, theyre JUST as surprised as you that theyre on #SororitySisters. - There are advertisers who are DIRECTLY supporting #SororitySisters. When you hear, Sorority Sisters is brought to you by... those are the ones who made a decision to be lead advertisers. That means T-MOBILE. We really need to target them. So how do you win? Glad you asked... - Every television advertiser is very cognizant of their social media presence, and as a result, their reputation in social media. They spend a LOT of money to get people thinking about their product on Twitter (in particular) in the way theyve plotted it for months. What is their nightmare? When a bunch of people drive their social media message to the negative, and when I mean negative, I mean to where you make it trend negatively. Dont believe that all publicity is good publicity. Thats a lie. It may bring awareness, but not good publicity. So what do you do to get VH1 to pull their programming. - Send the advertisers negative tweets with the following: ----- The advertisers official Twitter address ----- #SororitySisters hashtag so that it trends to people who dont know about what youre doing. ----- #boycott(insert advertiser name) Also, if youre VERY specific about what product youre NOT going to buy because of their support of #SororitySisters, then you win even more. So heres a typical effective Tweet: #SororitySisters is offensive to Black women. @nissan, Im not buying your Rogue car cause you support it. #boycottnissan Most major brands have a war room where they look at a real time screen and can see where their name comes up, both positive and negatively. If its negative, a big ole red circle starts to build. By making that circle really red, it gets put in a report, and folks start investigating. And when folks start investigating, they start weighing: Do I want to piss off one million potential buyers of my product, or do I simply call VH1 and tell them to put me on something else, and get rid of the problem? When that happens enough, guess what? Other advertisers hear about it and, Hell NAW! is what they say when THEIR product is next to Sorority Sisters. And boom, no more Sorority Sisters. So, the choice is yours...get mad...or get even. Be vigilant and continue contacting these Companies until they yank their advertising. Hallmark, Carmex and Selma (the movie) have pulled their advertising. We can band together and get the rest of them too! Keep calling and tweeting. Voice your complaints and firmly state that you are boycotting their products and/or Company until they stop advertising on Sorority Sisters and VH1. Let them know that the show is racist and demeaning to Black women. From Lawrence Ross (Alpha Phi Alpha @alph1906): A short tutorial on social media hashtags: Brands spend a LOT of time and effort finding and then vetting hashtags before using them. Its not simply about using the name of the show. Its how they track EVERYTHING...as there are various metric services they use to figure out if that hashtag is doing what they want. Sometimes its a call to action...Go to XYZ and win a ZYX via #SororitySisters Other times, its just to see the negative vs. positive mentions and retweets. The reason why you want to put all of your activity on their hashtag is because it overwhelms it. Advertisers are following that hashtag too, and theyre looking to see if theyre getting good or bad pub. Now...when we create other hashtags...they CAN trend, but theyre like side streets vs. the freeway where all of the activity is happening. You are NOT helping VH1 or #SororitySisters by using their hashtag...instead, youre sabotaging it. Theyd much rather you have a side convo OFF their hashtag, than to be ON their hashtag. Like having an argument next door, instead of right in their living room. Just wanted to let yall know...
