Sharing with you a post from Shell Club15 Plus, Inc. JPE, Then & Now Folks, The editorial today of The Manila Times, pasted below, provides a good summary of the rise and fall of Juan Ponce-Enrile, the man who had cut across several eras in our fledgling political life as a democratic state. He can also be labelled as a survivor in the rough and tumble game of Philippine politics. Unlike others, he had shown he was willing to risk life, limb and career to achieve his objectives. Many doubt, however, which comes first - national or personal interest. History is now unfolding and the courts will judge him hopefully before he is called upon by the great Creator. The man, many have conceived to be invincible in the field of politics, is now an aging and tired warrior. The wars he had chosen had many times been concluded in his favor, but age and health is now a burden that may not help him defy the rigors of a long and cruel battle. Even his lead counsel, Atty. Estelito Mendoza, while still brilliant and certainly steeped in the law, is also an old and tired warrior in court, reportedly relying on some tablet or Ipad to help him in the courtroom. Health, indeed, is the great equalizer. Like the many warriors in the past, history will judge those who rose and tried to affect the lives of people, one way or the other. And history is always written by and with bias to the victors. Note: If Hitler had Eva Braun, Mark Anthony - Cleopatra, Helen of Troy, JPE had his in the person of Atty. Gigi Reyes, the 25th senator of the realm. Many will find the analogy apt and liberating. Terry manilatimes.net/category/opinion/
