Sharjah to get 500 security cameras Afkar Abdullah (Principal Correspondent) (afkarali@khaleejtimes) / 13 September 2014 The newly installed cameras will start operating within the next 20 days and will be connected to the operations room of the police. Sharjah: The Sharjah Police have started installing 500 surveillance cameras around the emirate’s roads and roundabouts. The newly installed cameras will start operating within the next 20 days and will be connected to the operations room of the police. The step is the first phase of the three phases of a comprehensive project that will be implemented and is expected to be executed over a period of five years in collaboration with Dell International. The approximate cost of the first phase of this installation is Dh30 million. Sharjah is considered to be the third city worldwide to use surveillance cameras following New York and London. The details were unveiled following the signing of a partnership agreement between the Sharjah Police and Dell International which is in charge of installing the cameras. Major-General Humaid Al Hadeedi, Chief of Sharjah Police, said that the project is aimed at enhancing and updating the security system by implementing latest advanced technologies to ensure safety and security of a rapidly developing UAE. “The cameras are of a very high quality in terms of taking pictures and making videos. They have a very high storage capacity in case we need to retrieve any video for security purposes,” he said. The cameras will be installed on various roads and public areas as per a study by the police and will be connected to the operations room of the police to get immediate details of road accidents and traffic flow. “We have chosen Dell after completing a comprehensive study and due to the company’s expertise in offering solutions for technological surveillance systems. The company will be in charge of completing the logistics operations and the final steps of the project,” he added. Marioas Has, director of Dell said the surveillance videos recorded contribute in offering information and a detailed analyses of accidents. The cameras will also offer live videos of police patrols and motorcycles to ensure best service from the first respondant.
