Shawnee Mission Celebrates School Social Worker - TopicsExpress

Shawnee Mission Celebrates School Social Worker Month Throughout March, schools across the country are honoring social workers for the roles they play in student success. School social workers have specialized training to help address student needs and promote student achievement within schools. Amy Williamson, Rushton social worker, and Patti Ingraham, sixth-grade teacher demonstrated one example of this important work this weekend. Both accompanied several sixth-grade girls who attended a recent “Expanding Your Horizons” conference held at Emporia State University. This event brought female students to the university of hands-on workshops and career discussions led by professionals in careers related to science and math. This is just one example of the many ways social workers make an impact. This year, National Professional Social Work Month, is celebrated with the theme “All People Matter.” In Shawnee Mission, social workers “truly matter,” Pam Lewis, elementary social worker coordinator said. Using their expertise in family and community systems, they help address the social-emotional needs of students and often help connect individuals to essential community services. “They make a difference in the lives of our students and their families daily,” Lewis said.
