Shayne at the Asylum Sseekers Centre in Newtown today. Many thanks to a lovely man, Mohamed Duar, Head of Fundraising, for an informative tour of this very impressive facility. It includes everything you can think of to address the needs of those who arrive here, traumatised, with nothing. Often the one hot meal a day provided at the ASC is all they will eat. Theres also a larder, occupational guidance and help with getting work when the visa documentation is sorted, legal aid, volunteer medicos and nurses and a fully equipped clinic and dental aid, accommodation, financial relief, psych care and counselling, recreational, English learning, educational and gym facilities ... run by professionals and 200 volunteers. Its a massively moving response to a humanitarian crisis which should be the province of our own government.
