ShazzandWill, United States “Hard to beat! Great experience.” 5 of 5 stars Review Varanasi was our last stop on a two month visit to India and what a perfect place to spend our last few days. Not only were the spiritual aspects of this holy of holiest cities apparent in our location, but to wake each morning to the sun inching over the Ganga was simply sublime. Our view was from a spacious, colorfully decorated room in the Ganpati annex (1200 rupee/19.00USD) a few steps from the main building through a winding, narrow alley. This comfortable room included a spotlessly clean bathroom with plenty of hot water, free wi-fi (although signal was stronger in the main building), and access to the rooftop restaurant overlooking the myriad activities on the river. Food in the restaurant was mostly okay but the paneer butter masala curry and veg. cutlets were especially good. Service was a bit slow but we were in no hurry. The front desk staff were very knowledgeable and helpful, arranging transport to and from the airport, booking boat rides, providing maps, and just conversing about the Hindu way of life. I highly recommend calling/booking ahead to ask them to pick you up at the airport-the 900 rupee fee for 22 km ride is well worth it and the driver will be waiting with your name on a card at exit-hassle free! Its also good to have someone from the hotel pick you up because when they drop you off you still have a pretty long walk through a maze of alleys, rife with the same sights, smells, and sounds which continually accost the senses in India!
