She came to attend a party in Tinsel Town from Chennai. Tall,Dusky and a face so attractive that a party guest remarked: Maal Achcha Hai. This girl who was only 15 at the time didnt even understand that remark which she overheard. But on the spot she decided ,she would one day show the entire community attending how they would have them running for that Maal. Her stepping stones to stardom werent easy at all. Her first few films,she looked plump and not at all star material. Saawan Bhado where she acted opposite Navin Nishchal she was an ordinary village girl directed under very modest story lines. Rampur Ka Laxman had beautiful music and a hero opposite her was not really serious about his acting.Thus the film got noticed more for its music than quoted for hero or heroine titles. It was only after this that Rekha after working with Hrishikesh Mukerjee,an ace director who gave a small role in Namak Haram came to realise that she has much more acting potential . She took on her talent seriously when Hrishida promised to make make a film written with a character solely for her. She came on full bang with wonderful comedy timing and peppy acting in this lovely film Khubsurat which knocked every door to annouce Rekha has arrived.And with what a thumping glory. From then on Rekha worked not only her figure ,personality but her acting became a classy one.Her dance which was prominent in Muquadar Ka Sikander was noticed as much as her acting acumen. It is not surprising then that while Rekhaji gave us films with family stories like Khubsurat,we loved watching her perform Mujras which later gave her the National Award winning film:Umrao Jaan. A simple Ghar made by Gulzaar or an utterly roamntic Silsila by Yash Chopra went House Full during Rekhajis Era. The most expressive face,a lovely emoting voice meant for comedy or tragedy,a fluent figure for any dance form.blessings which Rekha groomed herself into becoming the Rage in the Film Industry. Today we wish Rekhaji a very Happy 60th Birthday and feel very proud that we could see her films. Happy Birthday Rekhaji and many Happy Returns of the day.
