She looks nothing like you. !?! Why would anyone say that to ANY parent? From another perspective, I often have to hold my tongue from saying things that might be hurtful or frowned upon when listening to people discuss all the medical interventions they are willing to endure and pay for in order to raise children with their DNA. Recently, someone said to me You never know what you are going to get [with an adopted kid]. As if you know what you are going to get with a child you give birth to. Autism, acccidents, learn differences, diabetes, gender-- you know none of those things when you get pregnant. And you have no idea what may happen along the way, but we risk it anyway. On the contrary, you know more with a child you adopt, especially if you adopt an older child. That statement is an ugly disguise for I would be more able/ willing to deal with those things because the child was mine and i would love them automatically. One day I hope to live in a world where more people become parents in order give love, guidance, and protection to a human being who deserves it by virtue of being born, not by virtue of who gave birth to them.
