She was so young, and she was nine months pregnant. She and her husband were traveling, but their 1994 Honda broke down, and they wound up having to walk for five miles on the highway. They were obviously really poor, and walking along the highway in the suburbs usually means youre either mentally ill or a busboy coming home from his shift, so people just drove by. Weve all done it. They got to one of those 1950s style motels, and the desk clerk was basically a really nice person, but there was no room available at the Motel...everybody who was staying there had prepaid. And as the desk clerk tried to figure out what to do, he had the same thoughts I would have had: yes the girl was pregnant, but she and this guy looked really scruffy, and she was what, 14, and they were probably heroin addicts and might steal stuff and or have bedbugs. He WAS nice, just busy, and practical. You want to help, but you also have a job and responsibilities and you work hard and it is not your responsibility to take care of young people who have made some bad choices in their lives already. So he gets an inflatable mattress and some blankets, and puts them in the garage. Its a tight squeeze because his car is in there, and his dog and cat are too, because they both like to pee on the new living room rug. Anyway, he makes the kids comfortable on the cement floor, squeezed in next to the car, and goes back to work. On the way, he notices a really bright light in the sky. Might be a plane? But he doesnt have time to look because he has to go to work. Meanwhile, the local Walmart is having a weird time, because the PA stops playing Taylor Swift and suddenly plays music so exquisite that everyone who hears it, thinks of his or her or others happiest moments in life, like walking with Mom in a summer field when the grass smelled like clover and you still knew without a doubt that the world was safe forever and your family loved and you could have your dreams. Then a person came into Walmart who was so incredibly special that there was no arguing with it, and this person said come on, were going to a garage because you will be happy again forever. So this is nuts but you know its true. You apologize to your customers and leave. When you get there, Prince William and Kate are there. They have no idea why either. It is MESSY in the garage, because the girl has given birth, and there is blood everywhere. This is not a place you would normally want to be...a seemingly homeless and probably heroin addicted couple, whose family has obviously thrown them out. But the baby, when you see Him, makes you feel so much love. You just love. You Iove. So you and your co workers move the car out of the garage, and some of you who live close by, bring the Most beautiful things you own, that comforter set that you saved up for because it was so beautiful and reminded you of better times. You bring your grandmothers gold locket that you inherited, that is your most treasured possession, because you want this baby to have material things that make you happy. Its not a sacrifice, its an expression of the goodness and beauty that the Physical world can offer, and you want this child who makes you feel love, to have it. The amazing person who led you here, says the world is hard, but there is Love. This baby is just a baby but this baby is pure love, and that is real and from now on, you can know that Love is real. And you are Loved. Its all True. Then Prince William and kate arrive, because their security guards got a mysterious radio transmission- and that music!and their little boy goes and instinctively kneels in front of where the new baby is. Which is nuts, because George will be King someday, but children know Love when they see it. A couple of Harvard professors show up, and they say We have never felt Love like this. It makes us want to study harder and give the world our gifts of intellect, because seeking Truth and Learning is a form of service and Love.. And Love is truth, so science and poetry and engineering and alla that...all in line with this Love that is so present. Thirty three years later, the baby will be executed because He says that you should forgive and be kind and take care of people who are unfortunate, or really sick, or mean to you. That Love is being uncomfortable in the service of Love, which rewards inconvenience because you get more Love.. As any Mom who has ever gotten up with a migraine to make breakfast and take her kids to school, knows. The kid also said that you wont feel good just doing what you want and only following Love when it makes you look good or feel good, but that you will be happy if you do something you totally dont feel like doing, like forgiving , which kind of sucks, because it means even if your brother is really unfair and mean to you you can still see his inner good, still love him the way you loved each other when you were children because he doesnt know any better and is probably in huge pain. And you dont know when your own capacity for foolishness will make you do stupid things and that doesnt mean you dont deserve to be loved and happy eventually. But that baby in that garage with the Walmart workers and the princes and wise people- that baby is the love in all of us, no matter what. And the love that made us. This happened last week. And also 2014 years ago, which is a long time, but in the same way that all Love is real? All time is now. So .. Merry Christmas.
