She was ten. Her list was big, but she was sure that the small bag her father brought had everything she wanted. She pounced on the bag, called her brother and both together skimmed through the contents. 100 waala, her brother exclaimed. 3 packets Buuuuuuuuusssssssswaaaaaanam, she shrieked. Again, there was no sky shoot. No rocket. No cable car. But, she forgot her list completely. It dint matter. Her mind was counting the days left for Diwali.. With carefully crafted dreams of bursting every cracker. Saapda vareengala illa patni ya?, her amma started yelling n shhhoooooooooiiiikkk.. Both were before their meal plates. A long conversation between amma n appa.. Idhukke 500 rooba.. Ivlo dhaan vandhuchu.. Appa was doing some math. It dint matter. Again. A week later, shopping for Diwali... Amma selected a frock. Pink color. She frowned. Never did she like the color. But she never tried it before n hence said ok. It dint matter. New dress was an excitement. Yet another week later... She kept walking n walking. Hall to kitchen. Bedroom to kitchen. Bathroom to kitchen. Verandah to kitchen. Each time she was back with a delicacy. For, walking dint matter. Those delicacies were divine! Few more days passed.. She got up at 3:30 a.m. Waking early dint matter. Disgusting oil bath. Dint matter. New dress, sweets, crackers (of course, lesser than wat was bought initially. Little did her parents knew that the bandid queen and the Baghdad thief had sneaked a few n bursted them in terrace since the day it was brought home) The money was limited. The scope was limited. Everything was occasional but every single thing brought in big joy. Big smiles. Big celebration. Big fun. Big day and.. There was a family! In the later years. Everyone grew up. The family drifted apart in search of wealth. And ever since the growing wealth n independence, there was a downfall in the eagerness, the expectation and enjoyment. Sadly, the drift was huge! Festivals are a way of bringing in joy, appreciating a setup called family n relationships! Keep them alive! Happie Diwali :)
