Shedding a little light this week on Ralph Bozo Harrell, The Original Sad Faced Clown ( re-occuring images of him will come up if you Google Emmett Kelly)... If memory serves me correctly, Ralph was born in 1899 and became Bozo in 1914. He toured for 20+ years with an assortment of circuses like Haganbeck Wallace, Clyde Beatty, and many Shrine Circus dates before his death in 1979. His many routines he performed often included unusually heavy objects, which he would juggle or balance on his chin. Its arguable whether or not Ralph is the first to don the name Bozo, but I will say that this is the earliest recorded anecdote Ive found of a clown going by that particular name. Ive dug up little information online about Bozo after searching many websites and not much else in books or other sources. For such a seemingly dynamic clown. its a wonder to me why more information on him and his career isnt available...
