Sheep are Hardheaded: John 10:14 I am the good shepherd; and I know My sheep, and am known by My own. (NKJV) We have all viewed the picture of the shepherd carrying the young lamb across his shoulders back to the safety of the flock. When we gaze upon this scene of the compassionate and caring shepherd and his sweet little lamb, we feel the need to go “Ah isnt that adorable.” I am sure you have heard the phrase “There is one in every bunch.” This phrase may have been started by a shepherd many years ago when it came to dealing with his flock. Sheep in general are hardheaded but on occasion the shepherd will have a lamb that seemed to be born with an exceptionally stubborn and rebellious spirit. This lamb would continue to run off and place itself in dangerous situations and the shepherd would have to rescue and retrieve the wayward lamb. If this pattern continued he knew the lamb would eventually die. To save the lamb from his pending doom of self destructive behavior, he would break one of the lamb’s legs. He would then carry the lamb upon his shoulders and attend to its every need. As the lamb’s leg healed he would develop a bond upon the shepherd and accept his care and protection. Even after the leg healed and it walked with a slight limp, he stayed close to his beloved master. Some of us are born with the same spirit as the stubborn rebellious lamb. To save us from ourselves, our Shepherd will allow us to experience brokenness. It is through this brokenness that we learn to lean not upon our own understanding but upon His. Sometimes our brokenness leaves us walking with a limp from the consequence of our rebellion and that limp reminds us to trust in His Goodness. The Good Shepherd always protects His sheep and that includes protecting us from our sinful nature. I bet the next time you look at the lamb and shepherd picture you won’t see it as so adorable. Hopefully, you will still view it as loving. David Jones restorationpath.org
