Shefali Vaidya says: “Read a long rant by Shobha De bemoaning our terminally sick society and asking inane questions like why are our men so sick? Sick and tired of desi feminazis ranting on and on and on about how Indian men are rapists. I have many Indian men in my life. And so do all of you. Indian men are our fathers, husbands, brothers, lovers, friends, bosses, co-workers, sons, neighbours, soldiers, policemen, doctors, lawyers, uncles, cousins, pizza delivery boys, prime ministers....and most of them would never ever dream of forcing themselves on an unwilling woman. I am not glossing over the incidents of crime, or the need to have a safer society, not just for women, but for everyone. I am REALLY REALLY sick of this gross vilification of ALL Indian men. I am a mother to two sons and a daughter. I want a safer India for my sons and my daughter. I want my daughter to grow up free and fearless as much as I want my sons to be raised free and without guilt. Condemn the rapists. Condemn the murderers. Condemn the molesters, the oglers, the perverts. But dont treat ALL Indian men as guilty, until proved innocent. By all means, let us ask for better accountability from our elected representatives. Let us ask for better law and order. Let us ask for simpler laws, for more stringent punishment. Let us work towards a society where a victim is not blamed. Let us teach ourselves self defence. Let us teach our sons to respect women. Let us teach our daughters to speak up, to defend themselves, to never suffer in silence. But please, let us NOT teach our sons to be ashamed of their gender, of being who they are, and let us NOT teach our daughters that every Indian Man is a potential rapist just waiting for an opportunity!
