Shefford & District AA members’ catches have again demonstrated the wide variety of fishing available from the club’s waters. On the rivers James Turvey kicked off the new season at Pavenham and landed a fin perfect chub of 6lb 2oz. Fishing partner Kevin Wilkins managed a mixed bag of silver fish including a small barbel. The weir pool at Little Paxton proved to be a popular venue at the start of the river season with most anglers hoping for barbel or river carp. Kevin Williams fished a four night stint and found the bream in a very obliging mood totalling well over 40 bream between 5-8lb, which were all caught between 5pm and 10am with only small fish feeding during the heat of the day. Kevin’s last fish was a bonus 7lb 14oz ghost/common carp. Kevin was joined by Andy Howard for the last two nights and on the final night of the trip Andy finally managed a barbel of 3lb at 5pm. Then at 8pm his rod tip slammed around and reel screamed off as he connected with a hard fighting barbel of 11lb 12oz. Kevin Williams rounded off his first week of the river season on Broom River where he managed several roach up to a pound on sweetcorn. Although a struggle for some, The Airman has produced some excellent catches during the week. Gary Barnes landed a 7lb 4oz bream and a good net of roach during the day and targeted the catfish. However, pike took more interest in his bait and he landed a superb summer pike of 25lb at 1.30am and followed this up with two other pike to 13lb. Although pike look ferocious they are quite fragile and need to be handled with care, and should be supported in the margins until they are strong enough to swim off. Phillip White decided to do an overnight session for the catfish and in the early hours of his birthday latched into a hard fighting catfish that took a full 40 minutes to bring safely to the net and weighed in at a massive 55lb, and the biggest from the lake this season. Paul Swift and his 9 year old son Josh also enjoyed a very productive session. Josh fished sweetcorn and maggot on a waggler set up to land a good net of roach and two tench to 4lb 6oz, whilst dad Paul land two double figure carp. The carp fed well at Broom Lake at the beginning of the week but catches began to tail off as temperatures rose during the week. Double figure nets of roach have been reported from several areas of the lake with more selective baits again picking out the bigger fish. Some anglers have also enjoyed some good nets of bream on the feeder with fish ranging from 1-6lb. 25 anglers took part in the Dean Johnson Memorial Match fished over 24 hours with 5 teams of 5 anglers. Unfortunately the high temperatures meant the carp were not in an obliging mood and of the ten carp caught the biggest was a 15lb common landed by Craig Lancaster. Carl Vernon’s team won the match with a combined weight of 77lb made up of 4 carp, 7 bream and a mixed bag of 6lb. Sadly we have to report that life member Alf Dickinson passed away this week. Alf spent many years on the committee before stepping down due to ill health a few years ago, and his many roles within the club included Chairperson, Treasurer, Membership Secretary and Fisheries Officer.
