Shefford & District AA river venues began to show some good form just before the latest cold snap. Mick Burr targeted the perch on Broom River and was rewarded with four perch in total, with three fish over 2lb and topped by perch of 2lb 6oz. Pike also took a liking to Mick’s lobworm bait and after landing a small jack of a few pounds, he later found himself attached to a much better pike. Fortunately it was nicely hooked in the scissors and did not bite through the line and Mick managed to squeeze it into his small landing net after a spirited fight. Mick’s scales bottomed out at 13lb and the pike was probably in the 14-15lb range. Peter Biernis also managed two perch around the 2lb mark from an undisclosed stretch of the Ivel. The roach suddenly went in a finicky mood at The Airman with Colin Smith and Alan Thomas finding the fish would only feed in short bursts on their latest trip. They could only get bites by fishing in the deeper water and the intense feeding spells only lasted for 30-40 minutes in mid morning and late afternoon. James Turvey also targeted the roach and was delighted to land a redfin of exactly 2lb. Willington Lake will host the next round of the pike series on Sunday 11th January (match details from Bryan Lancaster on 07810 454819), with the lake closed to members not fishing the match from midnight until 5.30pm. Members should also note that Broom Lake, the adjacent stretches of river and car park will be out of bounds to all members from 5.15pm on Thursday 15th January through to 7am on Saturday 17th January.
