Shelton crying wolf Editor, As is often common with Council - TopicsExpress

Shelton crying wolf Editor, As is often common with Council member Shelton’s recollection of past events, his recollection of the 2010 election results is at odds with the facts. Council member Mccracken was securely reelected with a 197 vote margin, not by 97 votes as stated by Council member Shelton. In fact council member McCracken’s victory was by a greater margin than that enjoyed by the first-place candidate. Secondly, council member Shelton’s lack of understanding of parliamentary procedure leads him to the erroneous conclusion that council member McCracken supported the city paying for candidate statements simply because the amendment was offered by council member McCracken. I was at the meeting and it was apparent to me that Council member McCracken wished to move the item to a conclusion (after 20 minutes of bantering), and council member McCracken recognized that the best alternative to limit further diatribes was to force a vote on the specific issue, honoring the parliamentary principle that the mover of an action must support the action with regards to the vote. Parliamentary procedure 101 is a “study session” I believe all council candidates should attend and probably revisit annually. Third, council member Shelton employed the fallacious logical argument of ad hominem, attacking one’s opponent’s character, as well as a flawed argument based on false cause. The conclusion? Council member Shelton is “crying wolf” instead of addressing the real issue that candidates should be able to find 14 people to contribute $99 to a campaign to pay for the candidate statement rather than expecting our taxpayers to pick up the tab. For someone who says they want transparency in government, and is always looking out for the taxpayer, I guess he’s hit a home run. Yes, council member Shelton, you’ve made your self-aggrandizing tactics transparent and you’re looking for the taxpayer to pay your way. Not on my dime. Teri lrish Porterville
