Sheltons first high school basketball team, 1911. The player at the far right is Lawson H. Woody Sanderson. Sanderson entered the Marine Corps in 1917 and became an aviator. He is credited with conceiving the idea of dive bombing in the early 1920s, while stationed in Haiti. During WWII, Sanderson served as commanding general of the Fourth Marine Aircraft Wing in the Marshals-Gilberts area, and was designated to take the unconditional surrender of the Japanese on Wake Island. Sheltons airport was renamed in honor of Woody Sanderson in 1966. Photo from the Mason County Historical Society.
