Sheriff Timothy B. Howard the evening arrest of a Hamburg man for Boating While Intoxicated following such complaint in Lake Erie off Sturgeon Point. Erie County Marine Unit Deputies Tim Dusza and Mike Okal responded to Lake Erie off of Sturgeon Point around 10:30pm Saturday night for a report of a boater driving recklessly near the shore and possibly intoxicated. A description of the boat was given and Deputies were able to locate said boat about two miles off of Sturgeon Point in Lake Erie. As Deputies approached the boat, the occupant, 24 y/o Shawn W. Hilliker of Manor Ln in Hamburg, was found to be sleeping in the boat. Hilliker was awakened and upon further interview was found to be intoxicated. He was arrested and charged with Boating While Intoxicated, Reckless Operation of a Vessel, and other vessel equipment violations. The boat was towed to shore. Hilliker submitted to a chemical breath test which resulted in a .11% BAC. He was later released to a third party on appearance tickets to the Town of Evans Court at a later date. The Marine Unit was assisted by patrol Deputies Brendan Connolly and Matt Krypel. The Erie County Sheriffs Marine Unit issued 15 vessel citations for violations Saturday along the surrounding waters of Erie County.
