Sheriffs Search and Rescue (SAR) Volunteers happened to be in the right place, at the right time to rescue a pilot who crashed his hang glider in the East County. The nail-biting rescue was caught on tape. More than a dozen SAR volunteers were on the Pacific Crest Trail off Kwaaymaii Point in Mount Laguna for training on rope rescues Sunday. SAR has to be ready for any call including high and low angle rescues. This training involves using rope systems over the edge of a building, structure, cliff or other steep or vertical terrain to help rescue a person in need. They were packing up their gear around 12:30 p.m. when a pilot launched just 25 feet away from SAR volunteers. He crashed upon take off right in front of SAR volunteers. Sheriffs SAR volunteers applied what they just learned from the training, immediately setting up ropes and pulling the pilot back up to the road. The 69-year-old was treated by paramedics for bruises. Sheriffs Search and Rescue (SAR) is an all‐volunteer unit. Together, they perform wilderness and urban rescues, as well as search for missing and at‐risk persons. Teams are available 24 hours per day to respond to local, state and federal agency requests.
