Sherlock Holmes When Im reading just for fun my genre of choice - TopicsExpress

Sherlock Holmes When Im reading just for fun my genre of choice is usually science fiction, however Ive recently found myself reading Sherlock Holmes. I suppose Im not unlike so many others who have become interested in the classic detective series after the two box office hit movies starring Robert Downey Jr. and Jude Law. It was the performance of these two actors that peaked my interest in the books. Firstly, because of Downeys portrayal of Holmes, and secondly the portrayal of both performers regarding the relationship between Holmes and Watson. Downeys Holmes was so eccentric and even spastic, he was so disposed to fits of deep depression and manic bouts of ecstasy, his wit was so sharp and quick and his observations so cutting and bold it seemed nothing like the Holmes I recalled from the old Basil Rathbone films. That Holmes seemed...how should I say...overtly British? I think what I mean is he was far more proper and decidedly more reserved than Downeys Holmes. So after watching the first film an untold number of times I knew I had to find out if Downey had nailed Sir Arthur Conan Doyles Holmes or was just laying it on a bit too thick. So I began reading. Are you a fan of the movies and/or books? What do you think I discovered? CC
