Sherry posted this earlier and I thought it very interesting. 96% of the commercial vegetables available in 1903 are now extinct. And eight of the fifteen breeds of pigs raised in the United States fifty years ago are now extinct, along with a staggering sixty breeds of chickens that were raised in the United States prior to World War II. Per the Center for Biodiversity and Conservation and the American Livestock Breeds Conservancy. Consider this when you go to the store, commercialization is ruining the biodiversity of our food. Grow some yourself! Heirloom and Heritage breeds are available. The taste difference is amazing when food isnt grown for storage only.
