Shi`ar - شعار - in Arabic can be loosely translated as war cry. It is designed to: - rally troops on the ground - be a codename to prevent friendly fire - keep rank and file intact alongside many other wisdoms. In any case, these were not Dua or forms of Dhikr. In Badr, it was: أحد أحد. This is one of the names of Allah. It is also probably a nod to Bilals cry when he was tortured at the hands of the Kuffar when he was a slave in Makkah. In Uhud, it was أمت أمت, which means Kill, kill. In the Trenches, it was حم لا ينصرون. In Khaybar, it was الله أكبر، خربت خيبر. Ibn `Abd l-Barr adds that it was الله أكبر، خربت خيبر، إنا إذا نزلنا بساحة قوم فساء صباح المنذرين There were also warcries by rank and file. The Muhajirun had their own warcry (يا بني عبد الرحمن), as did the Awsi Ansaris (يا بني عبيد الله) and the Khazraji Ansaris (يا بني عبد الله). Ibn Taymiyyah speaks about this in the context of these names being the most beloved to Allah, and thus were used for these three groups of the Sahabah. After the Prophet peace be upon him passed away, Yamamah saw وامحمداه. Personally speaking, this was probably in reference to the law of Zakah being the same after the Prophet as it was in his time, and Allah knows better. In the era of al-Hajjaj, Ibn l-Ash`ath and the Iraqis attempted to overthrow his army (which was quashed), and their warcry was يا ثارات الصلاة, and in some narrations it was يا دبارات الصلاة. This is because it is reported that al-Hajjaj used to force people to delay their Salah. In some questionable chains, the Prophet peace be upon him is reported to have said يا كل خير and يا أصحاب سورة البقرة in the battle. The latter is also reported for Yamamah. There are many, many more warcries recorded in books like al-Aghani by al-Isfahani, al-Bidayah, Wa-l-Nihayah by Ibn Kathir, Ansab l-Ashraf by al-Baladhuri, as well as the Futuh l-Sham in front of us that is incorrectly attributed to al-Waqidi. Further investigations would reveal various warcries with the Ya (Fulan) Ya Mansur formula.
