Shinyo Maru Story (Sept.7, 1944) by: Rosemarie Miranda Seven hundred fifty American POWS inside this ill-fated ship downed by a submarine not knowing there are POWS their kind,their kin, their skin created quite a stir in the sea off Sindangan bay six miles from the shore eighty three swam for life made it with bated breaths one reached the shore but expired the next day the good locals assisted them fed them,nursed them,cared for them makeshift houses constructed fattened cows slaughtered fragrant rice nourished them back more than a month later they were fetched by their own kind and returned to the families they left behind now,seventy years later the town reminisced the event officials united to make a marker reminding the next generations of the heroism and hospitality of the families in the area we are part of this history we stepped on the grounds where they used to tread and dreamed of the land across the seas today,we salute the bravery and the hospitality of old allies wars make great stories wars create history we make poetry #ShinyoMaru #Sindangan #ZamboangaDelNorte
