Shit. Just shit. Ive been trying to get the smartest dog we have at the shelter either adopted out or simply fostered ever since Ive been volunteering there. A couple of days ago, this dog, Banjo, caught the eye of a lady who wanted to foster a really active and smart dog. This lady and her elderly mother saw me playing fetch with Banjo (who is brilliant at fetch, in spite of a deformed left front leg) and I wound up spending the better part of an hour showing her everything Id taught him; as well as making certain she knew about his idiosyncrasies well before she took him home. Today, I saw Banjo back in an outdoor kennel. Hed been returned due to the old lady claimimg that she thought he was scaring her miniature Schnauzer. Were Banjo in an LA shelter and a movie dog trainer to find out about him, hed be a movie star dog. Banjo looks like someone took an English Spaniel body and screwed a Rottweiler head on. Hes a strikingly unusual-looking dog but what makes him really special is his level of intelligence. He loves to play and practice commands. My best description of Banjos intelligence is that hes Border Collie smart. Its just that hes also super energetic and he gets bored easily if not given something to do. Now hes sitting in the shelter again, depressed as hell and probably headed for our rarely used euthanasia list (we are a true no-kill shelter but when we get overfilled with animals, they sometimes have no options left other than euthanasia). I HAVE to get this dog adopted.
