Shiva is Nataraja. Vishnu is Natawara. Both dance, but very differently. When Shiva dances, his eyes are shut and he is lost in serene isolation. He does not know we are watching and admiring the performance. When Vishnu dances, his eyes are open and with his welcoming smile he is inviting us to dance. He wants us to watch, engage, participate and enjoy. Shiva reveals the potential, who we can become indifferent of all the fetters that society imposes upon us. Vishnu celebrates who we are, fetters notwithstanding, with all our inadequacies and imperfections. Both are needed from time to time. Indra, does not dance: he watches others dance, enjoys those who grant him pleasure, and rejects the rest. He is not worshipped.
