Shoalhaven City Council has been recognised for its ongoing commitment to the area’s natural assets after being nominated as a finalist for in the prestigious United Nations of Australia World Environment Day Awards. Nominated in the category of Local Government Award for Excellence in Overall Environmental Management, the award winners will be announced at a special gala function taking place at Luna Park on Friday 13 June. In being nominated, Council has been recognised for its work in educating and empowering the local community through issues of sustainability along with the organisation’s unique array of environmental programs. Further to this, Council has also entered into a number of partnerships and collaborations with local community groups, schools and universities to the betterment of the area’s environment. Some of the programs and notable achievements made by Council in the field of environmental management include – • Implemented over 90 percent of sustainability projects as identified in the Sustainability Action Plan 2012-2015. • Porters Creek Mini Hydro Project • Installation of over 90 kilowatts of solar power across high use community buildings. • Home sustainability programs • Water catchment workshops • Catchment and Beach water quality monitoring • Estuary Health Report Card • Registering the first Biobanking site in NSW (Garrads Reserve, Narrawallee) • Threatened Species environmental assessments • Climate Change Adaptation Plan • Development of Sustainable Events Policy and Action Plan • Reclaimed Water Management Scheme • Regional sea level rise projections and policy response framework Environmental Services Manager, Kelie Lowe said the award nomination was due recognition of the wide array of environmental programs and partnerships run by Council. “Shoalhaven City Council has long been regarded as coordinating one of the most successful and extensive environmental management programs within the Local Government framework,” said Mrs Lowe. “Given the area’s unique and extensive natural environment, Council has led by example in making the necessary changes to protect our pristine natural assets and create a more sustainable future for the area. “Through this leadership and the provision of ongoing education initiatives, Council has assisted the local community in reducing water and energy consumption, curbing unnecessary habitat fragmentation and improving local biodiversity.”
