Shocking. Positively shocking. Fifty years ago today, Goldfinger was released in British cinemas (and was released in America in December of 64). Up to that point there were no GREAT spy films. To misquote Auric Goldfinger himself, Man has climbed Mount Everest. Gone to the bottom of the ocean. He has fired rockets at the Moon. Split the atom. Achieved miracles in every field of human endeavor... except espionage films. While the first two movies did okay, Goldfinger was really the start of all the craziness. Mr. Bond, they have a saying in Chicago. Once is happenstance. Twice is coincidence. The third time its the start of a phenomenon. I know that I for one would not be the same if it werent for these movies. You might think Im joking, but as I learned from a cantankerous quartermaster, I never joke about James Bond. So take a little time out of your day to watch the Clip below, or if youre like me, watch the whole movie. And get excited, because principal photography on Bond 24 starts on December 6th. We may know know where this thing is headed, but to quote our old friend Felix Leiter ...its to a drink or a dame.
