Shole Pakravan MP Bezans Statement on Reyhaneh Jabbari in the House of Commons of Canada MP Bezan continues to advocate for Iranian prisoner Ms. Reyhaneh Jabbari Ottawa, ON- James Bezan, Member of Parliament for Selkirk-Interlake, issued the following statement addressing the recent news of Ms. Reyhaneh Jabbari’s imminent execution: “I am again advocating for Iranian prisoner Ms. Reyhaneh Jabbari. Ms. Jabbari continues to be at risk of imminent execution for defending herself and killing her attacker who w...as attempting to rape her. She is only 26 years old, and has recently been transferred from Tehran’s Evin prison to Rajai-Shahr Prison. She was transferred to be executed, and was told to say her goodbyes to her mother and her family. “On the day of her attack, she was abducted under the guise of a professional meeting. Her attacker poured her a drink, and then locked her inside the room. He proceeded to put his arms around her waist and told her that she had no way of escaping. Ms. Jabbari tried to defend herself, and during the struggle, stabbed her attacker in the shoulder and fled. Her attacker later died from the injury. Lab analysis showed the drinks contained sedatives. Despite these facts, Ms. Jabbari was arrested and thrown in Iran’s Evin prison. Ms. Jabbari was tortured until she confessed to the murder, and was given the death penalty which was upheld by the Supreme Court of Iran. “In April, a court postponed Jabbari’s execution in the face of heavy international outcry, including an international petition with nearly 200,000 signatures. “This grim news that the execution will soon be carried out came as Iranian President Hassan Rouhani was speaking in New York at the United Nations General Assembly, trying to put a moderate face on the regime. “Instead of continuing to execute people, authorities in Iran should reform their judicial system, which dangerously relies on processes which fail to meet international law and respect jurisprudence. “I urge the Iranian regime to respect Ms. Jabbari’s rights. Her imprisonment and treatment are inhumane and unacceptable. I once again call on President Rouhani to exercise clemency, stay her execution and suspend her sentence.”
