Barnsdall, a single mother by choice, feminist and bohemian, was a progressive thinker for her time and moved to LA to pursue her passion for theater and art. She envisioned Hollyhock as an artists’ colony with studios, a theater and a home for herself. But Wright and Barnsdall clashed on the home’s budget (reportedly coming in at $150,000—three times the original price) and creative control. The home draws inspiration from the American Southwest and Mayan designs. And Wright incorporated Barnsdall’s favorite flower—the hollyhock – into a geometric motif throughout . But Barnsdall was never satisfied with the design and never lived in the finished home, which is now up for UNESCO World Heritage Site status. Today the home fulfills her original dream of offering art glasses, a performing arts theater and working studios to the community.
